Related NewsWritten by Ram Madhav | Updated: May 14 2015 2:11 pm As Modi visits Beijing let’s remember there is space for both India and China’s ambitions as global powers Related News Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping are making sincere efforts to take India-China bilateral relations to a new high Their sincerity can be gauged from the fact that Xi decided to visit India in September last year within a couple of months of the formation of the new government and Modi’s reciprocal visit is taking place in his very first year as PM The greatest impediment in India-China relations is the trust deficit By engaging with each other swiftly the two leaders have demonstrated that they are determined to address and reduce the trust deficit We romanticise and sensationalise our relations with China We expect big ticket announcements and breakthroughs on every high-profile visit We must not forget that the India-China relationship is the most difficult of bilateral ties Managing a number of contradictions in it is the real challenge for governments on both sides In the given geostrategic and geopolitical situation enhancing mutual trust and establishing a strong working relationship at various levels right up to the top is of utmost importance which the two leaders seem to realise “It is a little nave to think that the trouble with China was essentially due to a dispute over some territories It has deeper reasons Two of the largest countries in Asia confronted each other over a vast border They differed in many ways And the test was whether any one of them would have a more dominating position than the other on border and in Asia itself” observed Nehru in 1962 That we “differ in many ways” is key to understanding how to manage our relations At a time when Modi is embarking on his maiden visit to China as PM optimism pervades the establishments on both sides There are reasons for this optimism On both sides we have leaders who are perceived by their respective countrymen as popular and strong After starting on a slightly sticky wicket Xi quickly overcame obstacles and gained full control over the party and the Central Military Commission besides the government He has acquired the image of a strong nationalist leader Modi too enjoys the reputation of being strong and determined There can’t be a better opportunity for both the countries to address bilateral issues resolutely and embark on a journey of mutual trust cooperation and goodwill Deng Xiaoping once advocated a policy where the two countries set aside the contentious issues and cooperate more on matters of mutual interest and benefit It suited us in the last two decades Today we have fairly good relations in trade and commerce Bilateral trade has exceeded $70 billion Trade relations are improving further with India opening up more avenues for Chinese investments such as in railways and industrial parks There is a lot of Chinese interest in the Make in India campaign Several MoUs are expected to be signed during Modi’s visit to boost investments into India The sentiments expressed on both sides reflect optimism and pragmatism In a recent interview to India Today Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said: “China is ready to work with India to align our development strategies reinforce political trust expand mutually beneficial cooperation and progress together through mutual learning and assistance” Modi too expressed similar sentiments during Xi’s visit to India last September saying: “This is a historic opportunity for the relationship between India and China filled with vast possibilities We can start a new era in our relations If we are sensitive to our opportunities and challenges then I am confident that we will fulfil our responsibility to make it a great success” The Chinese have the traditional concept of the “Middle Kingdom” where China is a superior entity and all other countries inferior There was a Confucian dictum: “There cannot be two suns in the sky” China has nurtured great power ambitions for long Michael Pillsbury in his book The Hundred-Year Marathon: China’s Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower refers to a warning from military officer Liu Mingfu in China Dream “China’s grand goal in the 21st century” wrote Liu “is to become the world’s No 1 power” In November 2012 just two weeks after becoming the leader of the Communist Party Xi visited the National Museum in Tiananmen Square There after viewing a grand exhibition called “The Road to Revival” which recalled China’s century of humiliation beginning with the Opium War of 1840 Xi issued a call for achieving the Chinese dream or “the great revival of the Chinese nation” India too has its own ambitions to grow as a “responsible influential world power” The US-India joint statement issued during Modi’s visit to Washington DC has this to say: “Prime Minister Modi emphasised the priority India accords to its partnership with the United States a principal partner in the realisation of India’s rise as a responsible influential world power” India and China are two major powers in the Asian region today Deng once observed that a genuine Asian century could be possible only when China and India became developed countries Both are racing ahead in that direction In order for this race not to become unhealthy they must develop a strong understanding on important issues Maintaining peace along the LAC greater transparency in matters like river water data not allowing visa regimes to vitiate sovereignty questions are important issues for both the countries There are many areas at the regional and global level where our two countries can work together such as counter-terrorism and joint exploration of energy resources Of late China has elevated its “one belt one road” initiative into a major national mission However if those issues are linked to sovereignty questions there will be great difficulties in working together On the issue of counter-terrorism India and China could cooperate extensively Li stated recently: “China is ready to deepen counter-terrorism cooperation with India to better safeguard the development and security interests of our two countries” However this cooperation will succeed only when China revises its strategy of pampering radical elements in Pakistan in the hope that they will not target China The experience in the Xinjiang region since the 1990s shows that this strategy has not worked With Modi’s visit to China bilateral relations are expected to strengthen further One hopes that we succeed in achieving some measured progress in all the outstanding issues As Deng stated once “there is enough space for both the countries to prosper” The writer some way to go if he is to match the longevity of Ken Rosewall’s incredible career (Source: File) Related News While 14999 spectators were left wonderstruck as they watched Roger Federer reach the Wimbledon final a month short of his 36th birthday there was one man on Centre Court who could have shouted out “been there done that got the t-shirt” Anyone even remotely acquainted with Ken Rosewall however knows that simply isn’t the style of one of the great gentlemen of the game Instead the 82-year-old Australian was as awestruck as anybody on Friday as he sat with his grandson in the royal box watching Federer beat Tomas Berdych to become the oldest men’s singles finallist here since Rosewall in 1974 “I’m like millions of others I admire Roger so much” Rosewall told Reuters in an interview “I think he’s going to be a force in tennis for a few more years” As Federer continues to defy the ravages of age with his remarkable run this year – winning an 18th major title in Melbourne in January and now on the cusp of a record eighth Wimbledon title – the comparisons with Rosewall are inevitable “I’d like to be compared to Roger” Rosewall said with a laugh “I was playing some of my best tennis at 35 Roger’s doing the same thing I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t continue for at least another two or three years” Federer still has some way to go if he is to match the longevity of Rosewall’s incredible career as the Australian was 39 when he lost the 1974 final to brash youngster Jimmy Connors Despite that letdown Rosewall has retained the title of the oldest men’s grand slam champion in the professional era for 45 years after lifting the 1972 Australian Open trophy at the age of 37 “If anyone is to break it I won’t be sorry to see the record go to somebody like Roger” added Rosewall who was in London to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Wimbledon Pro event Rosewall won four of his eight grand slam titles after turning 30 and makes no bones about why he kept leading such a nomadic life for so long “I was 33 when Open tennis came in … I was still enjoying the tennis and I was playing well” said Rosewall “I still felt I was a strong force in winning events… and the chance to play for prize money that was the main motivation” DOOR STOPPERS Money which Rosewall now keeps neatly folded in a 14 carat gold paper clip he was awarded for winning the 1969 US Open doubles title played a significant role in his tennis career Unlike the champions of today who are used to banking seven-figure sums in prize money from the slams Rosewall started off in the 1950s when he played for kudos and little else Tennis Australia would pay his on-road expenses and a per diem but there was no money for winning grand slams merely “big bronze stumps” of trophies that would end up “being used as door stoppers” All that changed when Rosewall beat his great friend Rod Laver to triumph at the French Open in 1968 the first time a grand slam had opened its gates to professionals While it meant that Rosewall could compete in the majors again without worrying about financial security his long absence from the grand slams after he turned professional in 1957 raises a question that can never be answered “I believe I could have won another 10 more slams But who knows It’s too hard to tell” said Rosewall “I developed my game so that I could play well on any surface And in those days three of the grand slam events were on grass In Sydney where I grew up I learnt to play on claycourts “I missed 44 slams over 11 years after I turned pro and I missed playing at Wimbledon … in 72 and … 73 so that’s 46 “But I don’t think I would have played that many because if I had I would have been dead” Rosewall who is left-handed but switched to playing right-handed at his father’s behest cut his opponents down to size by “swinging away the backhand shots” despite being only 5 feet 7 inches tall Nicknamed “Muscles” because of his lack of them Rosewall sometimes wishes he could have faced some of the greats of the modern era and would have “loved to have tried my chances against Roger” There is one aspect of playing in the 1950s that he would never swap however “In the amateurs there was a lot of camaraderie with the players” said Rosewall who was part of tight-knit group that included Laver Fred Stolle and the late Lew Hoad “There was a lot more friendship and togetherness We travelled together we ate together we stayed in the same hotel …”People would ask ‘how can you be so competitive in the matches because you spend so much time together’ (Source: Reuters) Top News The league football tournaments in Europe start with the English Premiere League on Saturday The league which has often been hyped as the ‘most competitive’ will see renowned clubs such as Manchester United Arsenal Chelsea Liverpool etc facing each other to win the titleafter ninemonths of entertaining football fixtures But this year all eyes will be on a club which no one barely knew till a few years back: Leicester City The defending champions created a beautiful fairy tale in the football world by winning the leagueby a huge margin of 10 points ahead of the second placedArsenal Leicester City till only a few years ago used to play at the Championship level and were promoted to the big stage only in 2014 Playing under manager Claudio Ranieri the club had to fight hard in the 2014-15 seasonto survive on the big stage When the 2015-16 season started the odds of Leicester winning the league were stacked at 5000/1 and many believed it to be one of the clubs that will be relegated from the league at the end of the year But with the speed of Jamie Vardy the skills of Riyad Mahrez and the management of Ranieri the club shocked the world by winning the league It was a beautiful sight to see an underdog slaying the football giants in their own backyard But the celebratory period for the club is over For a few months Leicester City made a believer out of everyone But the belief is slowly fading now Many are doubtful that the club will face similar success this year The side failed to showcase their best in the pre-season games They drew 1-1 again Celtic and lost to PSG by 4-0 and against Barcelona by 4-2 If the Foxes failed to perform in 2016-2017 season they will be forgotten as a ‘one-time’ wonder; such is the cruelty of modern day football But what if they taste the success in the league again The truth is if the club performs well this season it is highly likely the legend of Leicester City will still fade away The shock value of the club which created a buzz around Leicester will go down It is exactly what happened with Manchester City The football fans cheered and celebrated the victory of the club in the 2012 when it won the league on goal difference against arch-rivals Manchester United on the last gameof the season But the legend of Manchester City faded away with the coming years; the club failed to garner much interest in their games even after continuous success and the stands kept getting emptier season after season The prospect of Leicester City facing the same fate are real For the club to be remembered well against the big European giants and ensure that they taste Champion’s League success Nobody expects the club to go past the Round of 16 which is exactly what the club must do They must book themselves at least a quarterfinal berth to make a believer out of everyone With the signing of CSKA Moscow’s star striker Ahmed Musa Vardy and Mahrez will find another fast runner alongside them with goal scoring ability The strikers must perform to thebest of their ability to ensure that the legend of Leicester City does not fade away In spite of football pundits around the world saying that the
