Embed from Getty ImagesDean Smith savoured Brentford’s first win at QPR for 52 years – but their triumph was somewhat marred by an injury to Lewis Macleod.Goals from Josh Clarke and Romaine Sawyers gave the Bees a 2-0 victory at Loftus Road, where they were by far the better side and could have won by a bigger margin.“The first half was as good as we’ve played,” said boss Smith.“We were outstanding in the first half – our intensity on the ball and off the ball. In the second half we needed to defend manfully at times and we did that as well.“It’s great to get the win – not just the victory but the performance we put on tonight.”Romaine Sawyers scored Brentford’s second goalBut there is concern for Macleod, who was stretchered off late in the match with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.Sidelined for much of his time at Brentford, the midfielder now appears to be facing another long spell out of action.“He was on crutches and in a brace. He said he felt a click in his knee,” said Smith.“It doesn’t sound great but I’m hoping it’s nothing long term. We won’t know anything until he’s had a scan.” See also:Brentford’s derby triumph: as it happenedBees beat woeful QPR in derby clash’Pressure’ will not help QPR – HasselbainkBrentford defeat worse than Newcastle thrashing – HasselbainkQPR v Brentford player ratingsBees man steps up fitness bid and scores in win over ReadingOur west London Championship team of the week Ads by Revcontent Trending Articles Urologists: Men, Forget the Blue Pill! 4 June 2014Addo Elephant National Park’s marine protection team has a new anti-poaching vessel which will be used to combat illegal fishing and poaching of the threatened abalone species in the protected area around Bird Island, South African National Parks (SANparks) said in a statement. The vessel, a Gemini Waverider Pro, was handed over last month by the park’s Honorary Rangers to replace the aging 14-year-old vessel currently in use. The Honorary Rangers are a conservation group of volunteers who work in support of SANparks.Situated close to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, Addo Elephant National Park is the third-largest of South Africa’s 19 national parks. The park has grown over the past decade to encompass a marine reserve that includes St Croix Island and Bird Island, both important breeding grounds for gannets, penguins and a variety of marine life.“It was decided that the vessel was the most effective support we could offer the Addo Elephant Park in their attempts to curb abalone poaching off our immediate coastline,” Rob Holliday, Honorary Rangers chair for the Addo region, said in a statement published on the SANParks website.Illegal harvestingThe large-scale illegal harvesting of abalone by organised crime syndicates started in the Eastern Cape, and mainly along the Port Elizabeth coastline, in 1996, SANParks said. As the resource continued to be plundered and became scarce, this illegal activity expanded in the direction of Bird Island in around 2002.In 2004, a marine protected area was established around the Bird Island group to try and curb the poaching, and in 2006 a complete dive ban was implemented, “but the plundering continued”, the statement said.In 2008, a SANParks marine section was established to maintain a presence in the area. The nine-person team alternates between being based on Bird Island and on vessels in and around the protected area, and has made a number of arrests and confiscated numerous vessels over the years.‘Shepherd’The vessel, christened the JMB Malusi, is named after three former marine rangers who were killed in a car accident near Alexandria in 2010: John Molefe Mapheu, Marvin Ricardo Williams and Bonga Richman Skotsho. “Malusi” is the Xhosa word for shepherd.Speaking at the handover of the team’s new vessel, John Adendorff, Addo’s conservation manager and acting park manager, said: “As a skipper out at sea, our rangers shouldn’t worry about the reliability of the vessel they’re skippering, and whether it’ll place their or the lives of their crew in danger.“Also, as an enforcement officer out at sea at night, combating illegal activities conducted by organised crime syndicates, they need the best equipment available to achieve the maximum positive results.”SAinfo reporter

And you have to pay for it? What is Marco Arment thinking? Today the Tumblr cofounder and Instapaper creator pushed out the inaugural issue of The Magazine, an iPad mag focusing loosely on technology. Launching a paid tablet magazine is gamble, but Arment has a fresh approach. The Magazine is, above all, simple. It borrows the stripped-down simplicity of Instapaper to present articles in a no-frills, text-heavy layout rather than packing in the kind of slick, animated UI elements favored by Flipboard. This emphasis extends to the editorial approach. Each bi-weekly issue will have only four articles. That’s something of a relief: I’m already flooded with articles via Twitter, Flipboard and Instapaper. For some readers, though, four articles might not justify a $4 monthly subscription fee. Speaking of the content, it’s very good. This is billed as a tech publication, but it’s not an avalanche of regurgitated news stories and longwinded gadget reviews. Instead, The Magazine focuses on thoughtful, well written essays about technology and topics that “appeal to people who love technology.” In the first issue, there’s an excellent story by Alex Payne that examines the revolutionary yet imperfect role technology plays in our lives framed by a series of personal traumas. Another essay deals with “weird schism between geeks who love sports and those who don’t.” It’s thoughtful, interesting stuff that would feel more at home in The Atlantic than on Techcrunch. Introducing a paid iPad magazine is an especially bold move at this moment. Several weeks ago, the Huffington Post stopped charging a fee for its tablet magazine after lackluster sales. Part of the reason may have been that readers were already conditioned to expect free content from the HuffPo brand, and the company was accustomed to bringing in revenue from ads rather than subscriptions. Across the board, publishers have seen mixed results from tablet-based magazines. Will people pay $2 per issue for four really good articles? That seems like a gamble to me, but perhaps readers will perceive The Magazine’s simplicity (amid a roiling sea of digital content) as a value worth paying for. If the project doesn’t turn a profit after two months, Arment says, he’ll kill it. The app isn’t without its drawbacks. The fact that the content isn’t free creates a necessary walled garden around it. That bugs proponents of the open, linked Web, but Arment does as good as job as he possibly can of making the content shareable across the usual social networks. Naturally, Instapaper is on the list of default sharing options. I wish I could save an entire article to Instapaper (rather than a snippet), but of course this would blow a hole in the paywall. The experience is pretty awesome overall. My biggest gripe is probably the name. The Magazine? Try running a search for that one in the App Store, even after the post-Chomp improvements in iOS 6. Good luck!Personally, I’m willing to stick around for a few weeks to see where this goes. So far, I like what I see. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got an out-of-control Instapaper queue to catch up on. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…

My guinea pig’s teeth fell out. Should I be concerned? If it has happened for the first time, it is not a major cause of concern. Guinea pigs have ‘open-rooted’ teeth which keep growing throughout their life because of wear and tear of the teeth enamel from their round plant-based diet. However, if the teeth have discoloured or your guinea pig is having difficulty consuming food, then you might have to hand feed him/her. Falling of teeth could indicate a lack of Vitamin C in your pet. But if the growing teeth seems misaligned or is causing gum sores or is breaking the skin, consult a good vet. Also Read – Feel what you fear My guinea pigs always have a strong smell coming from them even if I clean up the cage regularly. Is this normal? Typically, guinea pigs keep themselves very clean. Sometimes a musky smell can come from your guinea pig (especially a male) due to natural hormone fluctuations or during the period a baby guinea pig is growing up into an adult. The other reason could be that the faecal matter or urine is getting stuck on your Guinea pig’s bottom fur which could lead to foul odour. To clean his/her bottom you can take a cotton ball dabbed with a little coconut oil and gently clean the bottom of your Guinea pig. Also Read – Homecoming My pet guinea pig has a swollen foot and is unable to walk properly. It is also losing hair on the same foot. One of the main reasons is having wire mesh for it to walk on in its cage. Imagine if you had to walk on it, what would happen to your feet. Pododermatitis is a condition in which a guinea pig’s footpad becomes inflamed, develops sores or becomes overgrown. The appearance may be similar to callouses, or small tumours on the bottom of the foot. This condition is commonly referred to as bumblefoot. When bumblefoot is left untreated or is present in a very severe form, there are sometimes complications in treatment and the infected leg may have to be amputated. The infected guinea pig’s footpads may become inflamed (redness), develop sores, or become overgrown over the course of many months. Other signs and symptoms include: Loss of hair on affected foot Reluctance to move or inability to walk normally Loss of appetite due to pain Joint or tendon swelling Pododermatitis can be difficult to cure. Start with switching your pet’s living quarters to ones with a smooth bottom, improving sanitation, and changing the bedding to softer material. Your veterinarian will clean any likely wound, clip the hair around the affected areas and trim any overgrown nails. Affected feet should be soaked in an antibiotic solution, and antibiotic ointment should be applied. In severe cases, animals may need antibiotics and pain medications.
